When I was a teenager I bought a Silky Terrier from a pet store, I named him Toto. As Toto grew older he started looking less and less like the standard Silky Terrier and at age 6 his Hip Dysphasia prevented him from climbing
steps.
My love for kees started in 1987 when I bought my first keeshond, Nugget. He was four months when I got him and I was surprised to see that he was so light in color. I remember saying, like many new owners would say, "he is not a Keeshond, he is so white! He looks like a sheep.
Nugget's parents came from a pet store. His longer snout and larger ears made him resemble the orignial Keeshond. However, the temperament was not like the one a Keeshond should have. He was very loyal to my three small children at that time but was very aggressive toward strangers. He could have easily have bit someone.
My three children was raised with Nugget and I always had the fear that Nugget would bite one of their friends. I learned through research that the loyalty toward the family was a trait of the Keeshonden, however, the aggression toward strangers was not.
In 1997, when Nuggest was ten years old, the vet diagnosed him with heart failure. I didn't want my home to be without a kee so I went in search for a keeshond puppy. This time I went to a show breeder. I wanted to make sure that I didn't have the temperament problems I had with Nugget. It is my recommendation in purchasing a dog, is to do the research on the breed, find a respectable breeder and do not buy a dog from a pet store. Buying from pet stores promotes puppymills and bad quality dog breeding If you want a dog that's puppy mill quality or in some cases better quality, please go to the humane society. Those dogs need homes.

My love for the breed and my thrist for knowledge and desire to have good structure dogs lead me to the show line and showing dogs. Many years has past since the day that I looked at my first Keeshond from a book and seen a ruffed-coat smiling "Dutchman". The breed has everything I wanted in a dog.

Spellbind, my kennel, is named from a combination of love for medieval and fantasy. I strive to breed for the AKC standard. My dogs have beautiful heads: good stops, good dark shape eyes and small ears. Their backs are short: they are tall as they are long, with a nice tight tail on the back. My dogs have good long contrast thick coats. The temperaments is what a kee is supposed to have, my dogs love people, they are good towards family, as well as, strangers. They make good watch dogs, not guard dogs. My dogs have good structure. Since I started showing dogs I became a member fo the Keeshond fo America and helped found the Keeshond Club of Kentuckianna. My wish and hopes for the future is to endeavor in keeping the breed strong and pure and the smiling Dutchman will prevail.
